Theatre Group visit to The Score
17th April 2025

A joint group from Beckenham and Bromley had the opportunity to witness an enthralling performance of "The Score" featuring the legendary Brian Cox. His portrayal captivated the audience with every scene and leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
The Score is about JS Bach senior played by Brian Cox who in 1747 visited Fredrick the Great brilliantly played by Stephen Hagan, in Potsdam where his son Carl was a musician at the Royal Court. While he was there Bach was challenged to improvise a three voice fugue on a theme created by Frederick and his musicians. Bach managed to do this to their astonishment.
Bach lived in Leipzig and was horrified by the behaviour of Frederick’s troops in the city and challenged the King about this which led to some mesmerizing scenes between the two actors.
After Bach returned home he composed a famous anthology, The Musical offering, based on the fugue he had been challenged to perform. Frederick had immediately after this feat asked Bach to compose a six voice fugue. This was completed four months after their meeting and dedicated to Frederick.
All in all a very interesting and enjoyable afternoon at The Theatre Royal Haymarket.
