Switzerland at Bromley Little Theatre (bar show)

Switzerland at Bromley Little Theatre (bar show)

Bromley Little Theatre not only has a play in the main theatre every month, running for just over a week, it also has a monthly “bar” show in the area where people congregate for the main shows. These are always very intimate and now they have started having a matinee for these shows too, as well as an earlier evening performance on the Sunday.

A smallish number from theatre group attended this powerful performance for the Saturday matinee. It is a production with just 2 actors and was fully booked. Pauline Amour played the literary titan, Patricia Highsmith after she had retired to Switzerland and Josh Young played her visitor Edward Ridgeway. We were seated right by the action, and it was very well acted with a great deal of emotion and energy.

The play was written by Joanna Murray Smith and is a psychological thriller with an unexpected ending. It delves into the complexities that shaped both Highsmith’s life and work. A film is also being made of this work starring Helen Mirren as Highsmith so would be interesting to compare this with BLT’s production which was well directed by Joshua George Lawson and Jane Lobb.

Another very worthwhile trip despite the very hot weather.
