Madhu and Bromley u3a were chosen by the Third Age Trust to feature in a three-page article entitled ‘New Year, New Challenge”.

Since her childhood in India, Madhu had loved classical dancing and that carried on after she came to this country as a 23-year-old. But what had once been a passion became something she did just a few times a year.  It was only when she joined the folk dancing group at our u3a in Bromley, that she was able to dance regularly again, and now she teaches the others how to do the Indian moves she loves.

Three years ago, just before her 80th birthday, she reluctantly retired from her job as a GP. She didn't know what she was going to do with herself. Her family were worried that she would get lonely and depressed.  Madhu had heard about u3a and decided to give it a go. She went along to a coffee morning for new members and immediately felt welcome.

Since then, her life has been full again. As well as folk dancing, she has joined a bridge group and a garden group. She says, “The dancing keeps me fit and the bridge keeps my brain active.  I needn't have feared being lonely or lost.”
