The Comedy About Spies at the Adelphi Theatre

A smallish group from Bromley and Beckenham theatre groups attended the matinee of The Comedy about Spies on 24th September. This play is performed by the same company, Mischief, as The Play that goes Wrong which they announced at the end although some members had spotted actors they knew from that play already. As such it is very much a marmite production. You either love it or hate it! A couple of members left at the interval, but the others really enjoyed the play which as always is very fast moving and cleverly staged and performed. Slickness is what was needed and it certainly showed this.

The play, set in 1961, centres around a rogue British agent who pilfers plans for a top-secret weapon. CIA and KGB spies converge on London’s Piccadilly Hotel in pursuit of the elusive file. ‘Marvel at the comic timing and sheer physical bravura’ (The Telegraph) of a clueless young couple, a hapless actor angling for an exciting spy movie role, and enough double agents to confuse even the sharpest operative, and you’ve got a mission that’s hilariously out of control.

Some of the group are enthusiastic enough to have tickets to see Christmas Carol goes Wrong at The Churchill Theatre in October!
